If you haven’t seen Supermoto racing, you’re missing out. Simply put, it’s an exciting blend of road racing, flat track, and motocross attacked by very skilled racers. Some riders prefer dual sport machines, particularly ones that come in Supermoto editions from the factory. Others prefer top of the line off-road bikes which are then customized to meet the demands of Supermoto racing.
Our friends at Cycle News recently built their very own Supermoto bike, starting with a stock 2018 Suzuki RM-Z450. As you might imagine, there are many modifications to make to turn this into a bonafide Supermoto racer. The Cycle News team focused their efforts on the suspension before they turned their sights on wheels and tires.
The builders turned to a pair of 17-inch Dubya USA rims laced to Talon hubs. They also opted for a set of Metzeler Racetec SM tires to take advantage of the soft compound when on the tarmac sections of those Supermoto courses. All in all we’d say this is a pretty effective transformation, focusing on a few major upgrades that made all the difference.
